What does $1.3 million get you these days? How about the rarest collection of whiskey ever sold at auction. Breaking the world record for any lot of whiskey ever to go under the hammer, Sotheby’s Hong Kong sold a set of Macallan whiskies in limited-edition Lalique French crystal decanters for $993,000 USD (approx $1,321,500 AUD) earlier this month.
Titled the Macallan in Legacy Collection, the range of six Lalique decanters housed single malts aged from 50 years through to 65 years, each representing the Macallan’s Six Pillars:
The Macallan in Lalique – Exceptional Oak Cask, 50 Years Old
The Macallan in Lalique – Natural Colour, 55 Years Old
The Macallan in Lalique – Finest Cut, 57 Years Old
The Macallan in Lalique – Curiously Small Stills, 60 Years Old
The Macallan in Lalique – Spiritual Home, 62 Years Old
The Macallan in Lalique – Peerless Spirit, 65 Years Old
It was also the first time for such a collection to have ever been up for sale. Throwing in a little ‘gift with purchase’ (figuratively speaking), the sale included six miniature bottles from the Macallan Rare series, two each from 1937, 1938 and 1939.
When savouring such decedent liquor, one must sip from one of the six pairs of Lalique crystal whisky glasses all housed in the exquisitely crafted cabinet made of natural ebony by Lalique Maison, a one of a kind in the world.
Proceeds from the sale were donated to Asian based charities; “to achieve this outstanding price at auction is testament to the quality, detail and absolute skill and mastery of the Lalique craftsmen and our expert whisky makers, and we are proud that this work of art has secured a wonderful contribution to Asian charities.”
“This remarkable conclusion to The Macallan in Lalique Six Pillars series is a symbol of the strength behind our long-standing partnership and our unwavering commitment to going beyond the ordinary,” said Ken Grier, creative director for The Macallan.
Quite the sales result for an exceptional product.
Stay dapper gents.
