SPRING RACES : DERBY DAY STYLE GUIDE

With Spring Racing Season in full swing and ‘the race that stops the nation’ just around the corner, Melbourne Cup Carnival week opens the gates with Derby Day.

A sophisticated and chic dress code of monochrome black and white, Derby Day is all about the finer details to help bring your combo together. From patterns, checks and trims, it’s a chance to style up a modern look while also playing with accessories to make your outfit pop; think tie bars, fedora hats, pocket squares and for a contemporary twist, leather detailed shirting (check out ‘Get the Look #1’ below).

Pulling together a little Derby Day inspired look, I centred my outfit around this white double-breasted blazer by Saba and built out from there. Tailored black chinos by Brent Wilson anchored the base, while a houndstooth shirt by Hugo Boss added a little pattern and depth to the look. A solid black pocket square by Lanvin helped to include a colour block to help complete the top half of the look while connecting it to the tailored chinos.

Wristwear is also another chance to add dimension to your style. Beaded bracelets, silver or leather cuffs introduce interest. Worn here is a leather cuff by Fendi, black face timepiece by Gucci and a woven leather ring by Versace.

Derby Day’s restrained elegance of this classic colour palette can still have you in sharp strides by playing with texture and contrast. It’s also a day where bow ties are not worn and for those that want a take on the tradition further, the official flower for Derby Day is the cornflower.
