So you have your wardrobe down pat or are at least on your way, and are making a great attempt at matching your belt colour to your shoes. While you’re investing in a few superbly selecting suiting choices, what about your downtime zone. From an after-work whiskey to the weekend, hosting mates or a movie marathon session (to ease the Friday night hangover), having a living space that’s not only slick and sharp, but an inviting place to more than that of your four-legged friend should be high on the ‘to do list’.
What style lounge do you go for? What colour? Where am I going to put my bar trunk or bar cart? That side table with an air freshener behind the old lamp doesn’t cut the Camembert anymore. Creating that perfect environment can be challenging for the best of us. Keeping in mind excessive space mightn’t be something we all have a lot of, if your in serious need of a living room overhaul or just need a few corner fillers ideas, I’ve pulled together 30 ever-dapper spaces below that just might spark a little inspiration to smarten up your space plus a cheat sheet of a few pieces with panache to help ‘get the look’ of a sharp aviator inspired space.
Injecting a sense of your own style and personality is key to the success of any room, after all, it’s you that has to live there. Interiors guru and editor of Vogue Living Australia Neale Whitaker says “I believe a home should be individual and personalised and should tell the story of its owners’ lives”.
He also says in an article by The Australian paper, “it’s all about the size of the space and the quality of the styling, not the number of cushions.”
Including art in a space can not only add colour but character. N.W “One of the few exceptions to the “less is more” rule. More can be more. Random groupings of artworks can be visually powerful. Try mixing paintings, prints, sketches and photos. But keep them close together. Never try to match art with other items in the room. Let it have its own voice.”
“Don’t base your room around a piece of art.” “Design the room, put everything you love in the room, then find the art. Don’t try and do it the other way around because you will tie yourself up in knots.”
Cushions “If it’s a chore to throw them off the bed or sofa then you probably have too many. Contrasting cushions can be valid but try to link them with at least one common shade.”
Throws (the soft fluffy blankets that go over the arm of your lounge, not on the floor) “What’s the word for an excess of throws? Most interiors suffer from it. While one can have a pleasant softening effect, any more can make a room feel like the dirty laundry pile.”
Grouping “Try grouping objects of similar (but not identical) shades, or related shapes such as bowls, glassware or vases. You’ll generally find that related items work more effectively in multiples.”
One interior style that I think is quite dapper, is the aviation-inspired look and decor. So I thought I might invest in a little research time and put together the below ‘cheat sheet’ on how I’d pull together a sharp aviator interior look with a few pieces from various stores and designers.
Stay dapper gents.
