When a 1956 Aston Martin rolls in at auction, you know it’s not going to fetch small dollars. After setting records back in 1959 that gave Sir Stirling Moss a historic win at the 1000-kilometre Nürburgring race, the same iconic green Aston Martin DBR 1/1 broke a new record on August 18 for being the most expensive British car to sell at auction, achieving a price tag of a whopping $22.5 million!
RM Sotheby’s Monterey brought down the hammer on this rare set of wheels, with Ian Kelleher of RM Sotheby’s saying “when you’re looking at a car that is so historically significant, the price lines up. Because Aston Martin, over its history, hasn’t made as many cars as some of the other marques, we’ve seen strong gains in the last 10 years alone for cars such as the DB4 or DB5. Think about it. About 20 years ago, a DB5 might cost you $100,000, today’s it’s around $1 million. They’re fantastic to drive, easy to own, spacious and sporting. They’ll continue to go up.”
Dubbed as the most important Aston Martin models in history, you can catch more on the background of this icon here.
