The first Monday in May see fashion’s night of night’s light up for the annual Met Gala – The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Benefit.
The annual fundraiser for its Costume Institute brings with it a new theme each year and premise to the event. For 2017 it’s Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: the Art of the In-Between; shining the light on designer Rei Kawakubo founder of esteemed fashion label Comme des Garçons.
With Rei Kawakubo launching the Comme des Garçons label back in 1969, the now 74-year-old Japanese designer is the first living designer since Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 to be the primary and single subject of the Met’s fashion exhibition. Andrew Bolton, curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute said “Rei Kawakubo is one of the most important and influential designers of the past 40 years. By inviting us to rethink fashion as a site of constant creation, recreation, and hybridity, she has defined the aesthetics of our time.”
The Art of the In-Between has nine themes of dualisms, including Absence/Presence, High/Low, Fashion/Antifashion and Object/Subject. Kawakubo acted as honorary chair for the evening alongside Katy Perry, Tom Brady, Gisele Bündchen, Pharrell Williams and of course Anna Wintour.
The dress code stipulated “avant-garde” and the gents most definitely brought their A game. From seriously dapper threads to quirky styling here are the top 20.
