The past few months I’ve had the pleasure of spending some time back in the sunny north of Gold Coast for work and play and exploring a few new spots to savour and figured it’s time to share what I’ve come across.
A recommendation from a friend, we hit up Old Tom, the Gold Coast’s newest fine dining and classic Gin bar.
Stepping into Old Tom felt every bit dapper; from the luxe velvet booths and armchairs to the marble tables and gold interior finishes along with the softly lit space, set the ambience just right.
The inspiration and name behind Old Tom pays homage to the prohibition era of the 18th century. “In 1736 a Gin Act was established to try to stop people excessively drinking gin by adding a hefty tax to purchases. To get around the tax, public houses would have a tomcat carving outside of their business and people would place a coin in the cat’s mouth to receive a shot of gin. Thus Old Tom was born.”
Using this heritage and story birthed a gin bar that serves up fine tipples. The gent behind whipping up palatable cocktails is Tom Angel, top 20 bartenders in Australia for 2017. Wheeling around an old-school martini trolley to construct your cocktail at your table, his repertoire extends well past Gin mixing; but keep in mind if your not a fan of Gin this place might just convert you. In between sipping this Gin concoction was a fine bottle of Rose and although we couldn’t stay for a bite to eat, the menu on hand is modern Australian which looked mouthwatering.
Located in the main drag of Broadbeach, pop in for a beverage at 12 Victoria square Broadbeach or head to www.oldtom.com.au for more.
Stay dapper gents.
