The mixed three-piece look is a great way to deconstruct the traditional or formal pairing of your suiting attire. As you go about building your suiting repertoire, creating versatility and flexibility in your wardrobe is key in being able to style and re-style your suiting.
Investing in suits, three-piece suits and separate waistcoats in varying colours, patterns or textures will open styling avenues for smart combos and add a layer of interest to your look of the day.
While still creating a dapper outfit, breaking away from an all matched three-piece (depending on the occasion), helps to tone down the formal edge and inject a slightly more relaxed vibe. And it most certainly adds the illusion of volume to your closet (without shopping more). Also helps to not limit yourself to only wearing each suit as they come.
I find that one of the benefits in being a regular shopper is you build separates that can work collectively. For instance, the trousers and waistcoat in this look aren’t from a three-piece suit, yet match in colour. Now I’m not encouraging a spike in your shopping habit, however knowing what you already have in your wardrobe is most definitely key on making an educated shopping decision; in that, you can style a single piece with other items you already have.
Viewing your wardrobes as a whole, as well as singular items that you can mix and style together, is the first step in being able to reinvent all the threads in your closet; after all, we all need to get the most out of our investments.
If you work tonally by pairing your mixed pieces in similar colours you’ll be onto a winner. This tartan check jacket I’m wearing in this look is from Marc by Marc Jacobs and is part of a full suit. By styling the look around the colours that run through the jacket, you have tonal consistency yet are able to complete a mixed three-piece look.
It’s summer here in Sydney so the small tweaks when finishing your look by in rolling up the cuff on your trousers and sporting espadrilles over a lace-up shoe are ways to help construct a look to appeal to the season. Loafers or double monks could just as easily work with this look. Do remember to also keep the last button of your waistcoat un-fastened.
Have a little fun working with what you have to make your next mixed three-piece look.
Stay dapper gents.
